This two-day workshop taught by Sarah Whinyates provides a fantastic introduction to pattern cutting by showing you how to copy an existing favourite garment( without taking it apart!) Sarah tutors at university level and has over ten years experience in industry as a freelance pattern cutter for the luxury retail market. Beginning with the basics, we ask that participants bring either a simple casual top (no sleeves) or a skirt, or a choice that we can help you choose from. In two days you can expect to cover the following (see below) and have an accurate pattern of your garment and toile to take away.
- understanding the tools required
- tracing your garment on to paper
- modifications for seam allowances, trims and finishing
- fabric grain and minimising waste
- cutting your toile
- sewing your toile, including trims and fastenings
- fitting your toile, and advice on modifications and tweaks
Important!! No previous experience necessary but you must feel confident using a domestic sewing machine.
What to bring? Your own sewing machine AND your garment of choice, or a few that we can choose from (N.B we plan to run more advanced workshops to tackle dresses, shirts, blouses, trousers and jackets – please get in touch if you would like to register interest.)
